Becoming a nurse is one of the most selfless acts a person can undertake. In a society of so many different races, cultures, customs, and beliefs, nurses are a universal gift to all, and the dedicated work that they do and kindness they deliver on a daily basis should serve as a reminder of the fundamental humanity inside us all.

Why Now

2020 is the World Health Organization’s Year of the Nurse and Midwife which was supposed to raise the profile and perceptions of nurses globally. Unfortunately, this year, more than 600 nurses have died globally due to the pandemic. Nurses are uniquely at risk of such pandemics.

The pandemic has exposed the weakness in health care systems all over the world most especially in resource poor settings. Nurses are working at the frontline but lacking Personal Protective Equipment and even tools to use.

The WHO state of nursing report shows that the world is facing a global shortage of 6 million nurses to achieve and sustain universal health coverage especially. We need to create nursing jobs and support nursing education. Beyond PPE and physical safety, nurses deserve timely pay, sick leave, health insurance and mental health support.
